New Filipino Martial Arts class - Mondays 5.30pm
Peter is certified by Guro Dan Inosanto and Sifu Marc Mcfann in Filipino Martial Arts
This class will run from 17:30 until 18:15 on Monday's starting 11th of May.
The FMA class will introduce the students to several areas including single/double stick, single/double knife and stick & dagger. Kali also has a very effective empty hands range (Panatukan) which translates from the weapon based movements and will be taught in this class.
With the use of weapons students will develop their attributes such as speed, timing and agility but will also learn sensitivity drills such as Hubud and grappling (Dumog)
Dumog has its empty hand application as well as the weapon portion which will be also covered in these classes.
The class due to the time slot will be small enabling me to concentrate on the individuals progression through the system, ideal for every level.

Setting the Balance by Leigh Richardson
Setting the Balance
We've heard Bob Spour say it and more recently we've heard Rey Diogo mention it and in the past I've heard Ian Guthrie (Peter's old Judo coach) and our very own Pat say it too. What am I talking about? Attribute training of course - or more commonly known as running, weights, Combat Athletics.....
Attribute training is great for the martial artist, it helps them develop further in their chosen system(s) and allows them to compete or perform better. Running for instance is a probably one of the best and quickest ways to get fit. Develop an awesome cardio system and build our endurance. Weights can help too. They can help us first of all get stronger but also gain weight, in a good way rather than the route paved with pies and pizzas!! Also there is Combat Athletics which is a class that has exercises designed to supplement your martial arts training.
However, therein lies the clue. It is supplementary training and should not be mistaken for training in the arts/systems you hope to improve in or compete in. This is a problem though, because what happens to a lot of people is, they start to put more effort into their running or weights training than their martial arts that they are hoping to improve in.
Put it like this, if I were to be given a choice of doing a run or training in say Pat's Jun Fan class, I would train in the Jun Fan class in an instant. I wouldn't even have to think about it. The benefits of that class alone will help me develop my punching, kicking and trapping skills along with other attributes like footwork, balance and head movement. As far as my fitness and strength go, I can hit the pads hard and fast and very quickly be on the way to improving my cardio and strength. But there is one important difference I will become fighting fit, Jun Fan Gung Fu fit rather than being a great runner - which I'm not really interested in becoming.
This short article maybe very obvious to some but I have seen people fall into this trap on a number of occasions and they can't seem to understand why they have good running times but still perform poorly on the mat or on the pads.
The bottom line is, if you want to get fit at doing Muay Thai, Jun Fan Gung Fu or BJJ then train hard in the art firstly and if you have any time left train in your supplementary systems.
I hope this helps to point out one of the many martial arts pitfalls.

Technique of The Week: Fundamental Jun Fan Kickboxing
Look at this drill in three stages.
The Prefix is an entry and in this case we are using a kick to move from kicking range into punching range. The three kicks shown here are O'ou Tek, Jit Tek and Juk Tek.
Then in the middle we have the punches and the selection of the combination used are historical and considered suitable for learning in the best way, but later on can be changed to alternative choices. Ray here shows how good body mechanic and technique can generate power, so try not to hit hard as that will come in time. Concentrate on the flow.
The suffix moves back to the kicks with the padholder stepping back and out of punching range, back into kicking range. There are plenty of kicks to use but we are focusing on a default drill here. If the padholder doesn't step back then we could move into standing grappling range.
So work the drill and learn to flow between the two ranges in the three sections seamlessly. Repeat good technique and DO NOT substitute technique for power. Power will come in it's own time.

Want to be a movie star?
From the creators of Blue Dragon, this is a pilot that we shot in February 2009 in preparation for our fothcoming feature-length movie. We haven't invested in certain equipement therefore sound and lighting are issues that will be worked on, however this gives a flavour of what is to come.
This pilot is quite fast paced and features small action scenes throughout. We spent only a few hours on each action scene but this is just a very small taste of what we're aiming for and what we're capable of.
Comments and constructive criticism are very welcome. Also, if you live in Aberdeen or around the city, please contact me if you wish to be involved.

* Mathew Russell - Red And Silver Arm Band
In the case of Leigh and Peter they have trained for a lot longer than anyone else through times when there was never any thought on gradings or qualifications. This extra time is represented in the 2nd Dan Black Belt qualification. Not only do they exemplify the quality AMAG can produce, they also seek to develop in their own pursuits.
James had trained for 10 year on a consistent basis and whilst he is moving on has exemplified the attributes that the AMAG training brings. He is also an excellent teacher and will be missed.
Ray, Caz, Ross and Bill have all trained for a long period of time and again are great examples of what you can achieve. All 4 will be taking their UFA tests this year.
We welcome Heather onto the Apprentice programme and I'm sure she will continue to develop in the same way the others have done so.
Matt has trained with me for around 15 years and while he has now a competency in grappling, his love for Muay Thai has been a great asst to AMAG. This qualification is the highest accolade i can give.
I hope you all will take the time to congratulate the above when you see them. They should be your role models and i hope your names will join them on the list in the future.

Lanark Results
Steven Peebles (Griphouse/DNFT) Vs. Bartoz (AMAG)
Steven "Bam Bam" Peebles wins by triangle choke rd 1. Bart took on the experienced Bam bam and nearly had him with a guillotine in the first minute, but Bam Bams hand got caught in the buckle on the ropes and the ref stopped the attack. Again Bart attacked the neck and punished Bam Bam with ferocious punches. However, inexperience allowed the more experienced fighter to win by a superbly executed triangle. A big thanks to Steven for stepping in late and well done Bart.
Semi Pro Rules 70kg
Billy Quinn (Dumbarton MMA) Vs. Arak Zienkiewicz (AMAG)
Majority Draw: Well the crowd booed this decision feeling that Arak had dominated the second round so conclusively and the surprise on both corners faces said it all. Billy came out strong and overpowered Arak with striking and it went to the ground with Billy controlling. Arak regained a good position and dominated the fight despite some good leg attacks from Quinn.
B-Class Thai 5x2 Min Rounds
Scott Gallagher |(Dumbarton MMA/DNFT) Vs. Chris Moir (AMAG)
Scott Gallagher wins by majority decision: Again the decision surprised us and if you looked at the two fighters afterwards Gallagher was concussed and bruised up where Chris didn't have a mark. Gallagher did utilise knees well and both fighters were equal on that with the judges swinging to Gallagher's ammount of kicks
Well done to all the fighters, you did well and i'm proud of you in what's been a difficult time. A great representation from the club to travel such a distance and a big thanks to the cornermen. Heads up to John and Gary who put on a great show.

Ray Wilsons Kettlebells Blog
This years Dog Brothers gathering went well. I am disappointed only having fought once on the day, but after the fight I took a coughing reaction to all the deep freeze spray that the guys use for bruised muscles and bones. Coughing and gagging for an hour made my throat, chest and guts wrench up and while I was scraping up all the last enthusiasm I had, I decided it wasn`t worth doing one more just to end up properly injured, so I accepted it and called it a day for that event. Disappointment was somewhat distinguished the next day when I was formally accepted into the Tribe. Happy Dog, am I!! LOL
Moving on, the one fight I had I was very happy with. I was in shape and confident when stepped up (bricking-it before hand though!). Some stick smashing, into clinch, and finished on the ground, both of us stick less!
Already training for next gathering! (tail wagging! LOL)
In building up to this event I had a training schedule that I was happy with. Training at my MA club, AMAG, regular runs and regular KB training. KB`s involved a daily "stacking" routine and then a high burn session 3 times a week, which was great.
The last two weeks I trained the long cycle daily that Steve advised, in place of my 3 times a week burn. The long cycle was a great burn, and in a different sense from what I`d been doing, so a welcomed change. I challenged myself two of my last training days by doing it as a double KB drill. One word..... f&%ked!! LOL, brilliant!
This Sunday sees me taking my first workshop for the AMAG members! The following week I`m beginning the weekly class there, which I`m really looking forward too. Once I make timetable arrangements, I`ll be opening to the rest of Aberdeen!
Rannoch has been a great help last few weeks. Full of inspiration and very encouraging!
Pat, my instructor, is very supportive and also a huge inspiration.
I`ll keep in touch and inform everyone as I go. Thanks again for your help, advice and teaching - I`m very happy to be training under the IKFF and Kettlebells Scotland banners!
Kettlebells Aberdeen, here we go!

Busy Time
McFann was superb as usual and the subsequent UFA camp saw us exposed to Krabi Krabong!
We have had Bill McGrath fly by, head of Pekiti Tirsia International. What a great seminar and well attended. If things work out right, i will be the PTI UK Director, organising Tuhon McGraths future UK trips.
Then we had Rey Diogo, BJJ 4th degree black belt come and teach in another amazing seminar!
Bob Spour is up next with a Self Protection workshop and Thai session on the Friday 18th/19th respectively.
July 7th sees Daniel Loreno pop by. Daniel trains with Guro Inosanto and teaches at the Inosanto Academy. He'll be covering Maphilindo Silat!
Meanwhile it was great to see Peter receive his brown belt in BJJ from Roberto Atalla, a well earnt achievemnt that is a credit to the club.
Finally, WELL DONE to Chris Moir on his recent Thai fight victory. His first one where he dominated and won by unanimous decision!

Sifu Marc McFann

This Wednesday sees the return of Sifu Marc McFann to Aberdeen Martial Arts Group’s Academy in Justice Mill Lane. Sifu McFann is a student of Sifu Dan Inosanto, the man that the late Bruce Lee left in charge of his system and teach on his behalf. McFanns qualifications see him not only as a Full Instructor under Inosanto in both the Jun Fan Gung Fu as well as the Filipino Martial Arts, but an Instructor in Mande Muda Silat (an Indonesian fighting art not designed for sport), Thai Boxing and Larry Hartsell’s (another former Bruce Lee student) Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Grappling Association. Sifu McFann also has black belts in Judo (in which he competed in the USA Team), Kempo Karate and Hapkido.
Now residing in Arkansas where he runs the McFann Acadamy of Martial Arts, Marc regular teaches seminars through the US and in the UK where he lived in the 90’s. Founder and World co-ordinator of the Unified Fighting Arts (UFA) Sifu McFann will be teaching the seven ranges of combat and the seminar is suitable for ALL levels and ANY style.
The seminar starts at 6.30pm and will run for 3 hours and costs only £25. Private lessons are available throughout the afternoon although these are being filled fast. There will be an opportunity to grab a beer with Sifu after the seminar.
